Key Definitions in the Mental Health Field

Mental Health – includes the ability to be engaged, productive and ‘present’ in one’s life and to cope successfully with the inevitable changes that arise. It recognizes the range of thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are part of being human, some of which can be quite distressing, but includes an ability to manage these effectively.

Mental Distress – Mental distress is when a person typically experiences high stress and unpleasant emotions.

Mental Illness – This term includes a wide range of conditions that affect how people think, feel and behave. These may be transient or chronic. Formal diagnosis comes from a health professional.
